Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award
These competitions are open to graduate students, post-degree dietetic interns, or medical residents; authors already holding a PhD degree are NOT eligible.
Graduate students and other trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration in the Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award Competition. Students/Trainees must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission (deadline January 31, 2021) by checking off the box on the abstract submission form indicating that they would like their abstract to be considered for this Award. A Committee, appointed by the CNS President and Awards Committee Co-Chairs, will make the selection of the Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award finalists using a blind review process. During the Annual Conference, a Committee will judge all the finalists (see competition details below) and determine the first, second and third place recipients. The names will be announced during the CNS Awards Banquet.
- By entering the competition, Students/Trainees are signifying that they are aware of the requirements and deadlines and will work to meet them in a professional manner.
- All submitting authors (and their primary supervisor) must be made by CNS members in good standing.
- All submitting authors must register and attend the CNS Annual Conference.
The eight (8) finalists in the Oral Competition and the eight (8) finalists in the Poster Competition will be notified of their status by email, with a personalized letter of congratulations and further competition instructions.
CNS Poster Competition
Graduate students and other trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration in the Poster Competition. Trainees must enter the Poster Competition at the time of abstract submission to the annual CNS conference. This competition will be part of the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) Annual Conference.
In order to be eligible for consideration, competitors must be a graduate student, post-degree dietetic intern, or medical resident; individuals already holding a PhD degree are NOT eligible. Students and trainees must register for the conference as a trainee and provide evidence for their trainee status as per conference guidelines. Students/trainees and their supervisors must both be CNS members in good standing. Those who are not already members must also submit an application with the necessary supporting documentation to CNS by the abstract deadline date. Students/trainees should not have won a national or international competition in the past, and must not submit the same work for another major competition. By entering the competition, students/trainees are signifying that they are aware of the requirements and deadlines and will work to meet them in a professional manner.
A maximum of eight (8) students/trainees will be selected, from the abstracts received, to participate in the Poster Compeition. Further judging of the eight (8) finalists will take place at the CNS Annual Conference.
Joanne Schweitzer Clinical Nutrition Research Abstract Award
The Joanne Schweitzer Award of the Canadian Nutrition Society is given to a registered dietitian who has submitted a clinical nutrition research abstract to the CNS Annual Conference. The candidate under consideration must be the first author of the abstract and must indicate that he/she is a registered dietitian at the time of the abstract submission. To be considered for this award, applicants must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission and must indicate that they would like their abstract to be reviewed for this award. The candidate must be a member in good standing with the CNS at the time of submission and be willing to present (oral or poster presentation) their work at the conference.
The abstracts under consideration will be evaluated for the originality of the research, the quality of the findings, and the clarity of the written work.
A committee, appointed by the CNS President and Awards Chair, will make the selection for the recipient of the the Joanne Schweitzer Clinical Nutrition Research Abstract Award. The Award will be presented at the CNS Annual Conference. The award package consists of a monetary award, framed certificate or plaque, and a complimentary ticket to the CNS Awards Banquet where the official presentation of the award will take place.
George Beaton Award
Recognizing Student Work in Public Health Nutrition
The George Beaton Award of the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) is given for the highest ranked abstract in the field of public health nutrition.
To be considered for this award, students must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission and must indicate on their form that they would like their abstract to be reviewed for the George Beaton Award along with the Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award. The applicant must be a graduate student, post-degree dietetic intern, or medical resident and willing to present (oral or poster presentation) their work at the conference. Both the applicant and his/her supervisor must be current members in good standing with the CNS at the time of submission to be eligible. Authors already holding a PhD degree are not eligible.

The award package consists of a monetary award, framed certificate or plaque, and a complimentary ticket to the CNS Awards Banquet where the official presentation of the award will take place.
Mohammed Moghadasian Award
Student Research in the Application of Nutrition in Cardiovascular Disease
The Mohammed Moghadasian Award of the Canadian Nutrition Society is given for the highest ranked abstract in the area of the application of nutrition in the treatment and/or prevention of cardiovascular disease.
To be considered for this award, students must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission and must indicate on their form that they would like their abstract to be reviewed for the Mohammed Moghadasian Award along with the Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award. The applicant must be a graduate student, post-degree dietetic intern, or medical resident and willing to present (oral or poster presentation) their work at the conference. Both the applicant and his/her supervisor must be current members in good standing with the CNS at the time of submission to be eligible. Authors already holding a PhD degree are not eligible.

The Gordon F. Mutch Young Investigator Award in Diabetes Research
The Gordon F. Mutch Young Investigator Award in Diabetes Research of the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) is given for research investigating the role of lifestyle in the prevention and/or treatment of type 2 diabetes. The Award is given for the highest ranked abstract investigating the role of lifestyle (diet and/or exercise) on the prevention or treatment of type 2 diabetes.
To be considered for this award, students must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission and must indicate on their form that they would like their abstract to be reviewed for the Gordon F. Mutch Young Investigator Award in Diabetes Research along with the Nutrition Graduate Student and Trainee Award. The applicant must be a graduate student, post-degree dietetic intern, or medical resident and willing to present (oral or poster presentation) their work at the conference. Both the applicant and his/her supervisor must be current members in good standing with the CNS at the time of submission to be eligible. Authors already holding a PhD degree are not eligible.
A committee, appointed by the CNS President and Awards Chair, will short list potential recipients for the Gordon F. Mutch Young Investigator Award in Diabetes Research. The Gordon F. Mutch family will make the final selection. The Award will be presented at the CNS Annual Conference. The award package consists of a monetary award, framed certificate or plaque, and a complimentary ticket to the CNS Awards Banquet where the official presentation of the award will take place.
Conference Abstract Award
The Conference Abstract Award is given for an abstract related to the 2021 CNS Thematic Conference field of Advances in Nutrition: Mental Health Across the Lifespan. This award will only be presented when there are relevant abstract(s) submitted for review.
To be considered for this award, students must enter the competition at the time of abstract submission and must indicate on their form that they would like their abstract to be reviewed for the Conference Abstract Award. The applicant must be a graduate student, post-degree dietetic intern, or medical resident and willing to present (oral or poster presentation) their work at the annual conference. Both the applicant and his/her supervisor must be current members in good standing with the CNS at the time of submission to be eligible. Authors already holding a PhD degree are not eligible.
A committee, appointed by the CNS President and Awards Chair, will make the selection for the recipient of the Conference Award. The Award will be presented at the CNS Annual Conference. The award package consists of a monetary award, framed certificate or plaque, and a complimentary ticket to the CNS Awards Banquet where the official presentation of the award will take place.
